Wow...email marketing is changing!  It is not about just typing a nice email and bulk sending it to a whole list of email recipients using BCC.  Getting to the inbox of your recipient is your ultimate goal. Make sure to do your homework and choose an application that can accomplish this goal. Standard web-based email or outlook for example are not intended for marketing.  Successful email marketing is more than just blasting an email.  The landscape for which ISP's allow you to pass your marketing messages through their gates are an everchanging process. Understanding this process is a must for email markting results that will provide more customers. 

Most good email marketing applications will provide spam testing where a score is provided on how likely your mail message is to be percieved as spam.  Also, usually recommendations will follow.  Other features such as list management, real-time tracking to view opens, clickthroughs, bounces and undelivered, and template design availability should be expected.  Make sure your list is permission based as well and always provide an option for your recipient to unsubscribe.  This is a must!  Good luck!.
