Things to Avoid When Designing a Website

Friday, 24 October 2008 07:59 by admin

The following issues generally arise while hosting or designing a web site, therefore, should be avoided.

  •     Confusing design – A good web design should be clear, transparent and easy to use.

  •    Pop up messages – We can avoid them to the maximum. The good web designer should stay away from pop-ups.

  •     Poor load time – Loading your web site with content is good, but overloading it with unwanted images, animations etc. is not and hence is better avoided.

  •     Over use of Java – Java takes a long time to load and also is the nightmare of a ‘malnourished’ PC.

  •    Poor use of HTML tables – Optimize the tables to give enough space to the content. The border, color fills and the font matters.

  •     Spelling/Grammar mistakes – Web designers and content developers should take special care to avoid spelling and grammar mistakes in the content.

  •     Poor organization – The content on the website should not be confusing or cluttered. In other words, the site should be neat, tidy and presentable.

  •     Inconsistent page design – When a page is being designed, stick to one design for all the pages. Consistency matters!

  •     No contact information – Be sure to provide the contact details of the company and of course the web designer.

  •    No 'about us' page – People will need to know more about the company. An ‘about us’ page is mandatory.

  •     No privacy policy – Every website should have an explicit privacy policy. The viewers should know whether their identity would be exposed.

  •    Different backgrounds on each page – Similar to the page design consistency, the background color or image should be the same throughout the web site.

  •     Poor content – This one drives the viewers away. Poor content is equivalent to no website at all.

  •     Poor navigation – People should be able to move about on the website quite easily.

  •     Over powering music set to auto play – This one not only overloads the web page, but is rather irritating also.

  •     Broken HTML code links and graphics – When a web designer promises content on a web site, provide it. People might be looking for it!

  •     Poor browser compatibility – The best website is cross platform and browser compatible.

  •     Large slow loading graphics – Avoid it!

  •     Too many graphics – Again, this not only makes navigation difficult, but also irritates the viewer and slows down the page load rate.

  •     Large Welcome banners – Welcome banners are a must, but keep it small and welcome.

  •     Flashing banners – This greatly affects the readability and aesthetic appeal of the pages. Use them wisely.

  •     Pages scrolling to oblivion – Make it short, innovative and simple.

  •     Multiple colored text – Colored text can be used to stress a point or to denote something. A word of caution though: Don’t over-do it.

  •     Multiple use of animated graphics – This again should be used only at a minimal level.

  •     Text difficult to read – Make the text legible. The font should have the right size, color, font, character spacing etc.

  •     Animated bullets – Avoid them!

  •     No Meta tags – The presence of Meta tags make the site more searchable and retrievable than web sites which do not have Meta tags.

  •     Too many graphic and/or line dividers – Line dividers have to be simple. There is no point in overloading it.

  •     Multiple use of different fonts – As said earlier, regarding the design of a page, the font should be consistent too. Use different fonts only if needed.

  •     Under construction signs – People hate it! So, avoid it!!

  •     Busy, distracting backgrounds – The background should support the content, not suppress it.

  •     Scrolling text in the status bar – Good for the kiddy kind of websites. For professional pages, this is a strict no-no.

  •     Multiple banners and buttons – This distracts the viewer. This negatively affects the impression that the viewer has about the web site. The site fails!

  •     Large scrolling text across the page – This again distracts the viewer. Page impression goes down and makes the whole web design process pointless.

  •     Poor use of HTML code frames – Like the wise people say, “If you don’t know how to use it, don’t use it”

  •     Large fonts – Stick to a fixed font size, which is neither too small not too big. Headings fonts need not be too big either.

  •     Poor use of mouse over effect – You can add sounds, font effects etc. as mouse over effects. But, the real question is – does the context demand it?

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Tuesday, 21 October 2008 07:21 by admin

Wikipedia defines Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, as “The process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a website from a search engine via ‘natural’ search results. As a site is presented earlier in the search results or as it attains a high “rank”, more searchers tend to visit that site. However, using SEO can also target different kinds of searches, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. SEO is nowadays being used as an internet marketing strategy. Optimizing a website for maximum performance of higher ranks involves modifications from the grass-root level. The HTML code of the website is edited, as the primary step. This is to improve the content as wells as to increase the relevance to a specific keyword of your choice. This removes the barrier for the indexing activities of search engines. At times, a site’s structure – its relationship with the content – will have to be edited too.  Due to these simple reasons, it would always be good for a client to incorporate SEO when a website is being developed, rather than trying to incorporate and apply it on a later date.
